Football in League One kicks off the overall return from the October international break in the EFL tonight and we have a clash between two giants of the division as Huddersfield Town take on Bolton Wanderers at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Following the surprise appointment of rookie boss Lee Grant over the summer, Huddersfield had started the season well but performances have since dipped and supporters are growing frustrated and concerned.

Frustrated and concerned is how Bolton supporters also feel with the inconsistency of the Trotters something of immense irritation, following their 3-0 hammering at the hands of Burton Albion last weekend.

The Sporting News brings you the latest tips and odds for this weekend as Huddersfield and Bolton both try and push themselves back up the League One table. A win for the visitors would move them above tonight's hosts in the table.

Huddersfield vs. Bolton: Who Will Win?

Huddersfield Town will believe they are the automatic title favourites, or at least they did after an ambitious summer transfer window, but things are taking their time to gel.

Bolton Wanderers have been in League One for far too long now. When they dispatched of Wigan Athletic 4-1 last month, it looked as though they finally had the quality to finally propel themselves out of the division, but there are too many issues for them to remain consistent.

The peak of both sides probably mark themselves out as the top two in the league but your very best once every three or four games doesn’t collect you 90+ points. It could end up being quite a chaotic affair with both sides requiring a statement performance and result in West Yorkshire.

  • Overall, there have been 106 meetings between the two, with the first in 1910, with Bolton having won 48 and Huddersfield managing 38 victories.

Huddersfield vs. Bolton Score Prediction

These are two faltering sides that should be performing at a much higher consistent level than they are and the pressure is on both the aforementioned Grant, as well as Bolton boss Steven Schumacher.

Huddersfield are lacking much urgency and understanding when with the ball, whilst Bolton can counter-attack with a brilliant efficiency at their best but they, too, lack a ruthlessness and a draw seems like the likeliest outcome at this stage.

Prediction: Huddersfield 1-1 Bolton (11/2 on Sky Bet)

Huddersfield vs. Bolton Team News

Huddersfield Team News

  • Huddersfield have stuck to the 4-2-3-1 shape throughout this season, despite the squad still resembling one what would be suited to their ill-fated back three last season, despite an array of new additions over the summer.
  • The Terriers could have two players back from injury for the visit of Bolton after both Antony Evans and Mickel Miller returned to full training this week.
  • The hosts do remain without Marcus McGuane and Jack Whatmough, despite the latter easing back to training, whilst Suriname international Radinio Balker could be fit and available after playing over the international break in CONCACAF qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bolton Team News

  • Steven Schumacher has been criticised for chopping and changing too much and that happened again last weekend with the needless inclusion of Sam Dalby ahead of Marcus Forss.
  • Cyrus Christie recently replaced the injured Josh Dacres-Cogley at right-back but the latter has returned to full fitness and could come back in with the former still struggling for 100% match sharpness.
  • Ethan Erhahon had been brilliant when starting for the Whites but he missed the recent trip to Burton due to injury, alongside Barbados international Thierry Gale.

Here’s how we think the two teams will line up for this League One meeting. We think Chelsea loanee Leo Castledine recently nominated for September’s League One Goal of the Month award, will keep his place for Huddersfield while top scorer Joe Taylor will have to settle for an impact role from the bench.
