There is an intriguing clash for both ends of the table in League One this weekend as struggling Burton Albion prepare to take on wannabe title challengers Bolton Wanderers at the Pirelli Stadium.

Burton have managed just two victories in their 10 matches so far this season but the Brewers managed to get their second win 10 days or so ago with a shock 1-0 victory over Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Bolton’s performance level has perhaps been the best in League One so far this season but the Trotters have lacked efficiency in both boxes and that has held them back. They most recently defeated Peterborough United 2-1 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

The Sporting News brings you the latest tips and odds for this weekend as Burton seek to build on recent improvement and Bolton try to finally launch themselves into a promotion challenge with some consistency.

Burton vs. Bolton: Who Will Win?

Bolton have had some horrible days and nights at Burton in recent seasons but Steven Schumacher’s side got them a victory there last season and there is still a hope they can put average performances and results against weaker sides behind them.

Burton backed up their 1-0 win over Cardiff with a respectable 1-1 draw against a strong albeit out of form Doncaster Rovers last weekend. Bolton’s inconsistency was best illustrated by their recent 4-1 hammering of local rivals Wigan Athletic a week before a 2-0 defeat to Northampton Town.

Bolton’s best should best every team in League One but finding it is an issue for the Trotters at the moment. That said, their fire power with Mason Burstow, Marcus Forss, Thierry Gale and Amario Cozier-Duberry as a front four marks them out as favourites for most matches.

Head-to-Head: Burton vs. Bolton

  • As mentioned, the most recent outing between these two sides saw Bolton defeat Burton 2-1 at the Pirelli in a game that appeared to launch a possible top two challenge for the Whites in mid-March before a collapse in their form.
  • That victory means that Wanderers are now unbeaten in their last six matches against Burton, having done the double over them last season.
  • Overall, there have been 13 meetings across all competitions between these two sides with Bolton winning four, Burton winning five and there also being four draws in the mix.

Burton vs. Bolton Score Prediction

The performances of Teddy Sharman-Lowe have left question marks for Bolton supporters and, despite improvement last weekend, he has still kept just two clean sheets so far this season.

The abundance of attacking talent for the Trotters, though, should mark them out as firm favourites against an Albion side who have leaked 15 goals in 10 matches and scored just seven - a joint-league low with Northampton and one less than basement boys Peterborough.

Prediction: Burton 1-3 Bolton (6/1 on Sky Bet)

Burton vs. Bolton Team News

Burton Team News

  • Burton will want to try and keep the same XI intact that has been improving in their last couple of games and they have no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues.
  • Tyrese Shade came off the bench for the Brewers to score against Doncaster and so he will surely come under consideration for a start.
  • A switch to a back five has helped Burton become a lot more difficult to play against, but it does heap the pressure on midfielder Charlie Webster to effect the final third.

Bolton Team News

  • Steven Schumacher has stuck with the 4-2-3-1 system, albeit the addition of Marcus Forss to the so-called ‘number 10’ role does mark it out more of a 4-4-2.
  • Cyrus Christie replaced the injured Josh Dacres-Cogley at right-back last weekend and put in an excellent performance so the Ireland international should keep his spot there.
  • Ethan Erhahon regained his place against Posh. Schumacher has been keen to avoid playing Erhahon alongside Xavier Simons in games in which Bolton will dominate the ball and don’t necessarily require a level of over aggression but their partnership is quickly becoming the go to pairing in midfield for the Trotters.
