The Red Sox have taken their time with the two best prospects in their minor league system.
Roman Anthony, an outfielder, and Marcelo Mayer, an infielder, are both top-10 prospects in all of baseball. They've spent the entire season in Triple-A thus far despite probably being ready for the major leagues.
A Boston call-up may be imminent for Mayer now, though.
Alex Bregman left Friday's afternoon game with an injury rounding first base.
There will be immediate calls to get Rafael Devers back in the field to replace Alex Bregman at third base.
But if that ship has sailed, the versatile Mayer might be the answer.

Mayer is a 6-foot-3 shortstop who was taken No. 4 overall out of a California high school in the 2021 draft.
This season, Mayer is hitting .265 with eight home runs, five doubles and a triple.
Sometimes, necessity causes action.

The Red Sox have been patient, but if Bregman misses time, they don't have room to be patient anymore.
Mayer's time should be now to help Boston weather this injury storm.
