Turkish club Trabzonspor have confirmed the signing of Andre Onana from Manchester United on a season-long loan.

Onana has faced heavy criticism during his time at Old Trafford, after a series of blunders - including his errors during their massive loss to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

The Cameroonian International was expected to be benched with the incoming £18.2 million Deadline Day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

The Belgian will likely become Ruben Amorim's number 1 choice for the Manchester Derby on September 14, with Altay Bayindir also being pushed aside.

Bayindir has started all of three United's Premier League fixtures so far this season, but has not kept a clean sheet.

Onana signed to the Red Devils from Inter Milan for £47.2 million in July 2023, reuniting him with then-head coach Erik ten Hag who also lead him at Ajax.

The keeper has three years remaining on his contract with United.

Why Onana had to leave Manchester United

The club has been in a slump to say the least.

They finished 16th in the Premier League 2024/25 season and as the new season begins, talk of relegation has already been swarming.

The Grimsby Town loss was another nail in the coffin for the side.

Amorim has been rumoured to be sacked or even depart on his own - depending on which ever side cracks first.

Onana was constantly backed by the head coach, despite his errors.

And it's the latter that the keeper will be remembered for.

There were saves and efforts early on that gave the Red Devil fans hope and looked to be a turning point in their downward spiral.

But since then, there have been plenty of moments that fans and the club want to wipe from memory.

With the shift in mentality at Old Trafford, and Amorim clearly trying to find shelter in the storm, moving Onana on from the team seems like the best option.

One of United's key issues is failure to keep clean sheets and having a new energy in goal is needed.

And 23-year-old Lammens could be the key to that.
