Magic cut ties with Mac McClung in surprising reverse decision, leaving dunk champ without a team image

The Orlando Magic had seemed interested in keeping Mac McClung around.

They extended McClung a qualifying offer, the first step to retaining a restricted free agent.

But on Thursday, the Magic rescinded their qualifying offer, according to NBA contract expert Keith Smith.

McClung is now an unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team.

Of course, McClung is best known as a 3-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion.

McClung has appeared in six total games in his NBA career: two apiece with the Magic and 76ers, and one apiece with the Bulls and Lakers.

He has averaged 5.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game across those appearances.

In the G League, he's a star, so it seems like a team should give him an extended NBA look. He'd certainly be an exciting high-usage player for a rebuilding squad.

McClung will get a chance to assess the market as a free agent and see if anyone is willing to give him a chance.
