After winning eight games last season and returning many starters, Athens has been able to meet high expectations this year.
Now, the Hornets seek to have perhaps their biggest win in recent history as they attempt to take down defending UIL 4A Division II champion Carthage in a key District 8-4A Division II contest. Athens travels east to Panola County to take on a Bulldog squad that continues to be clicking on all cylinders.
Athens, which brought back 10 starters on offense from a team that finished 8-3 a season ago, comes in having won four straight games, the latest a 52-8 win against Brownsboro in its district opener. The Hornets’ lone defeat came by a single point against Kaufman in the second game of the season.
Carthage, meanwhile, picked right up where the Bulldogs left off last season. They are 6-0 on the season, and are coming off a 60-14 win at Center in last week’s district opener.
Currently ranked No. 10 in The Sporting News Texas Top 25 poll, Carthage beat Kilgore in the season opener, avenging its lone defeat last season before reeling off 15 straight wins and claiming yet another state title at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the 10th in program history.
Now, can Carthage extend that winning streak to 22 games, or can an upstart Athens team take a huge step?
