It’s a showdown steeped in prestige — Champions League runners-up Inter Milan go head-to-head with 2023 Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense in what promises to be one of the most compelling clashes of the 2025 Club World Cup Round of 16.

The stage is set for Monday night at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, where Europe and South America collide in a high-stakes battle.

Inter enter the knockout phase with something to prove. Still reeling from a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of PSG in the Champions League final and a bitter domestic setback in Serie A, the Nerazzurri have started to steady the ship. After a sluggish 1-1 opener against Monterrey and a narrow win over Urawa Reds, Cristian Chivu's men found their rhythm, blanking River Plate 2-0 to top Group E and book their spot in the last 16.

On the other side, Fluminense come into this fixture with quiet confidence. They wrapped up Group F in second place after a goalless draw with Mamelodi Sundowns, but their standout performance came in a tightly contested 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund. Flu not only held their own but dictated much of the play — out-possessing the Germans and creating better chances.

Bet365 pegs Inter as the favorite for this Round of 16 tie. A win for the Italian side pays 13/20. Fluminense, meanwhile, are serious underdogs at 19/4 for a win. A draw after 90 minutes is priced at 11/4.

Lautaro Martinez to score at any time: 6/4 (Betway)

Despite battling through injury sustained in the Champions League final, Lautaro Martunez is still Inter’s go-to man. With 22 goals in 49 appearances so far this year, the Argentine forward already has two strikes under his belt in the tournament. He came close against River as well — denied once by Armani and denied again by the post. With his national rivalry against Brazilian sides adding fuel to the fire, expect "El Toro" to be fired up and in the thick of things in Charlotte.

Both Teams To Score in the second half: 3/1 (Betway)

This one's got late drama written all over it. With heavy legs and the threat of extra time looming, both teams will be eager to seal the deal in regulation. And both are known to come alive in the second half. Inter’s last four goals have all come after the break — including two against Urawa and two more against River. Fluminense has shown similar late-game explosiveness, netting three of four against Ulsan after the 66th minute. Given the stakes and scoring trends, this is a high-reward pick worth keeping an eye on.

Inter Milan vs. Fluminense predicted lineups, team news

Inter Milan will be once again without the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu, Piotr Zielinski, Benjamin Pavard and Yann Bisseck who have all returned to Italy to continue their recovery.

Marcus Thuram and Davide Frattesi could return to the bench after being sidelined for much of the tournament. Francesco Pio Esposito should again partner Lautaro Martinez in attack.

  • Inter Milan predicted XI (3-5-2, right to left):  Sommer (GK) — Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni — Dumfries, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Augusto — F. P. Esposito, Martinez.

Injured: Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Pavard, Bisseck, Thuram (doubt), Fratessi (doubt), Taremi (personal reasons)

Skipper Thiago Silva's fitness is in doubt after the former Chelsea centreback had to miss Fluminense's last game due to a muscle injury. His replacement Ignacio successfully slotted in for the veteran defender and could start again should the 40-year old be deemed unfit.

Fluminense will also be without Otavio, however, they will be pleased with new signing Yeferson Soteldo returning to full training and possibly making his debut against Inter Milan.
