Rookie running back Cam Skattebo has been a pleasant surprise for the New York Giants through five games, but he had his first real costly mistake in Week 5.
Skattebo has been pushed into a huge role since Week 4, and that continued on Sunday with Tyrone Tracy ruled out due to a shoulder injury.
Skattebo had another solid performance on Sunday, with the rookie carrying the rock 15 times for 59 yards and adding six receptions for 45 yards. His work in the passing game was particularly notable with Malik Nabers (torn ACL) sidelined.
However, Skattebo also lost a fumble inside the red zone in the fourth quarter that the New Orleans Saints were able to bring back for six, which was a crucial swing in a game that ended with a 26-14 score.
After the game, Skattebo took full accountability for his mistake, which shows an eye-opening level of maturity for the youngster.
"Sorry giants fans!!! I’ll be better for yall!!!! Love!!!" Skattebo said on X.
While costly, Skattebo wasn't the only one guilty of coughing up the football, as both quarterback Jaxson Dart and wide receiver Darius Slayton were also responsible for lost fumbles.
In all, the Giants turned the ball over five times, with Dart also throwing a pair of picks.
“Five turnovers to zero,” Giants head coach Brian Daboll said. “You’re not going to win in this league.”
"In the NFL, every team is a good team. Every team has talent," Dart added. "I just kind of felt like we just kind of gave the game away by those turnovers."
For Skattebo, that is just his first NFL fumble in 81 touches, so there is no cause for concern yet. And, we certainly aren't panicking on Dart, as ups and downs are to be expected for a rookie signal-caller.
There is, however plenty of concern for a Giants team that is currently 1-4 and seemingly going nowhere in 2025.
