The San Francisco 49ers have a need along the edge after Nick Bosa's season-ending injury and a possible trade partner has emerged after a recent rumor.
The potential trade partner is the New Orleans Saints, who have been pegged as a likely trade deadline seller amid their 1-4 start, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
Underhill reports that teams around the league believe the Saints will be amenable to moving some of their assets ahead of the trade deadline next month.
"There are teams interested in some of the Saints' veteran players and they'll be watching to see who becomes available in the coming weeks, league sources tell me," Underhill wrote on Saturday. "There's a feeling around the league that New Orleans will be open to hearing offers in the coming weeks."
The Saints have three edge rushers who could draw interest, including Curtis Granderson, Chase Young and Cameron Jordan.
The Niners have already been down the Young road before, so chances are they won't take that path again. He might be better than nothing, though.
Granderson will be the most coveted of the trio. After all, he's only 28 and is off to a hot start with 4.5 sacks through five games. However, seeing as how he might be the Saints' best defender and isn't over the hill, they might not be willing to move him.
If New Orleans is open to it, the 49ers should target Granderson first, as he's the only one of the three who could even come close to filling Bosa's shoes.
If not, Jordan wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.
His best days are no doubt behind him at the age of 36, but he's still got some gas left in the tank, as evidenced by his 2.5 sacks. Jordan would also come far cheaper than Granderson.
With the Niners sitting at 4-1 and looking like a contender this year, general manager John Lynch needs to upgrade the EDGE group.
We'll see if he can link up with New Orleans or another team for a trade at some point.
