Going into the 2025 campaign, one of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb's stated goals was to not drop a pass the entire season. Well, that goal is already unreachable.
Lamb was officially responsible for three drops in the regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night, a game the Cowboys ultimately lost.
Lamb's drops weren't inconsequential, either, as a few of them came on important plays during the game. He appeared to have a fourth drop on the Cowboys' final offensive series, but the pass was considered an overthrow instead of a drop.
"Man, that's terrible," Lamb said after the 24-20 loss. "Honestly, I feel like I can't point no finger at anybody else."
"I take full accountability and everything that's going to come with it," he added. "As for me as a player, I've prayed for moments like that and for the ball to come my way, and for me not to come up with it, that stings a little bit."
Lamb totaled seven drops last season and he's already almost half way to that mark.
His struggles to reel in the football overshadowed what was otherwise a good game for him. Lamb caught seven passes on 13 targets for 110 yards. Obviously, he could have had a lot more had he caught those passes.
"I don't worry about CeeDee Lamb," head coach Brian Schottenheimer said after the game. "CeeDee's going to be fine. A great player. Again, this was a team defeat, and we own that."
"It wasn't just those plays," quarterback Dak Prescott said. "There's throws out there that I want back. But it's Game 1, and he's a guy that makes those plays. He's going to make those plays. I'm not going to get down on him. I'm not going to lose confidence by any means. And he will make those plays."
The Cowboys spoiled what was a fantastic opportunity to get the season off on the right foot with a huge victory over the reigning Super Bowl champs.
Now, Dallas will look to rebound in a Week 2 game against the New York Giants at home.
