Why did Bills fan run off with Josh Allen's throwaway? Mike Tirico gives epic play-by-play of funny moment image

A simple throwaway in the Week 5 game between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots turned into a funny moment on Sunday night.

The play occurred in the third quarter during a Bills touchdown drive. Josh Allen rolled out to his right looking for a receiver, but nobody was open.

So he did what most quarterbacks do and threw the ball away. A Bills fan was waiting in the stands to catch the ball, but then did something unexpected.

The Bills fan started taking off up the stairs and went toward the concession area like he was leaving the stadium.

Mike Tirico had the hilarious calls.

Why did the Bills fan run off with the football?

It isn't clear exactly why the fan took off immediately with Allen's throwaway.

However, if we were to make a wild guess, perhaps the fan was hoping to keep the football, so he tried to make a B-line for the Highmark Stadium exit before someone from the league/stadium could get it from him.

The NFL does not allow fans to keep game-used footballs they get during games and that's because each ball has an RFID chip.

Again, this is just a guess, so don't hold us to it.
