Why Ravens' kicker Tyler Loop was given a field goal on a kick that looked wide left image

Tyler Loop made a 41-yard field goal for the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth quarter on Monday Night Football against the Detroit Lions.

Except, did he?

It wasn't clear that the kick actually went through the uprights.

Visually, it looked wide to the left.

But it counted to pull Baltimore within 28-24 on the kick by their rookie.

Why did the Ravens' Tyler Loop field goal count?

There was one thing working in Loop's favor.

Because the ball sailed past the goalposts higher than the top of the upright, it couldn't be reviewed.

It was all up to the officials down on the ground below the posts to make the call.

The entire ball is supposed to pass through the vertical plane of the goal to count the field goal.

That means, when the football was above the yellow post, none of it is supposed to be wide of the outside of the post.

There's no way to know for sure, but at minimum, that Loop kick was very close to missing.
