Red Raiders get their senior leader back for critical Big 12 clash.
Texas Tech’s quarterback question heading into this week’s Houston matchup didn’t linger long. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, after leaving the Utah game with an undisclosed injury, senior Behren Morton has been cleared to go and will start against the Cougars on Saturday night.
For the Red Raiders, who sit at No. 11 nationally, Morton’s presence is critical. Houston comes in undefeated at 4-0, its best start since 2016. But slowing down Texas Tech’s offense, especially with Morton under center, will be the Cougars’ toughest test yet.
Morton exited late against Utah, sparking concern about his status. Freshman Will Hammond shined in relief, throwing for 169 yards and two touchdowns. But head coach Joey McGuire eased fears this week, saying Morton “looked great” in practice and even worked on slides with trainers.
Through four starts, Morton has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards, 11 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. He owns a 19-9 career record, giving Texas Tech experience and stability under center.
The Cougars’ defense has been their calling card, but it showed cracks against Oregon State. Against Morton, there’s no room for mistakes. Containing him will decide if Houston’s perfect season continues.
Texas Tech visits Houston at TDECU Stadium, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT.
