Texas A&M is off to its best start in nearly a decade, climbing to No. 6 in the AP Top 25 after defeating Auburn 16-10 on Saturday at Kyle Field. The Aggies are 4-0 for the first time since 2016 and will now turn their attention to Mississippi State next weekend in College Station.
Head coach Mike Elko praised his team’s defensive unit following the win, pointing out the Aggies’ ability to limit the Tigers to 176 total yards. Auburn was shut down on key downs, failing to convert on 12 third-down attempts and twice on fourth down. Texas A&M also recorded five sacks while holding the Tigers to a lone touchdown and a field goal.
“Does anyone want to ask a question about us being 4-0 for the first time since 2016 or how the defense bounced back?” Elko said. “You held them to 176 yards, had five sacks and they were 0-for-12 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth down. Plus, we got the return game going again. My gosh, would you guys stop being so dreadful and gloomy?”
Saturday’s win was fueled by a balanced game plan that kept Auburn’s offense off rhythm while capitalizing on field position. If the Aggies can keep up this rhythm, it will serve them well for the remainder of the season.
With four straight wins to open the season, the Aggies continue their homestand next weekend against Mississippi State before hosting Florida on Oct. 11. That contest adds intrigue to A&M’s November trip to Austin to face Texas in a long-anticipated renewal of the in-state rivalry.
