Florida State couldn't survive late against Virginia, losing their first game of the season in a 46-38 double overtime thriller on Friday night.
The ninth-ranked Seminoles came into the ACC slate riding high after a dominant 66-10 victory over Kent State. Tommy Castellanos tried to inject new energy into the Seminoles’ offense in the fourth quarter. He delivered an outstanding 11-yard touchdown pass to Randy Pittman to force the extra frame with 36 seconds left.
Both teams traded field goals in the first overtime. Virginia got the first possession in the second overtime and took a lead with a Chandler Morris 4-yard touchdown run and successful two-point conversion.
Florida State tried to tie the game on the next possession. Castellanos found Duce Robinson in the end zone in what appeared to be a touchdown catch. However, after review the play was overturned with the Seminoles failing to convert on fourth down with a goal line interception.
Castellanos went 19-of-31 for 276 yards with two total scores and two interceptions.
For Virginia, Chandler Morris was the story of the game. The Virginia QB accounted for five touchdowns against the Noles defense. He finished with 229 passing yards for two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also had another three scores on the ground.
This was a historic win for the Cavs as it was the first time in program history upsetting a top ten opponent when being unranked. Virginia moved to 7-56-1 vs. Top 10 opponents all time.
