The question on every Utah fan’s mind after Saturday’s blowout win: did the Utes crack the AP Top 25? The short answer, no.
Utah dominated West Virginia 48-14, fueled by quarterback Devon Dampier’s career-best four touchdown passes. The performance erased memories of a tough Big 12 opener and sent the team into its bye week with momentum. But despite the statement victory, Utah still didn’t earn a ranked spot.
Arizona State edged out Utah for the final spot in the poll. The Sun Devils, now 4-1, stunned TCU with a 27-24 comeback win.
Utah’s votes fell short. The Utes received 52 points in the poll, just behind South Florida’s 53. Arizona State pulled in 107, more than double Utah’s total.
Finally, timing matters. Utah enters a bye week while Arizona State heads to Salt Lake City next. That matchup could give the Utes the breakthrough they’re waiting for.
For now, Utah remains just outside the rankings, but with a chance to prove it belongs in October.
