Jeff Brohm emphasizes focus and toughness as Louisville meets James Madison Friday night image

Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm knows Friday night’s matchup with James Madison will be anything but routine. As the Cardinals get set for their second game of the season, he’s putting discipline and execution at the top of the priority list.

“We’re excited to get to game two. I think we’re going to play a really good football team in James Madison that knows how to win,” Brohm said. “They’ve done it over the years. They’ve proven it. They play a good brand of football. They give you a lot of things that you got to deal with both offensively and defensively. They’re well coached and they got really good players.”

The first step is cleaning up mistakes from the opener. “It’s disappointing to have that many penalties but to have them in that type of a game is good for us,” Brohm explained. “Quite a few of them are correctable and things we can fix. Probably over half of them were with new players that we just got to teach what is a hold and what’s not. Fixing the holding calls will be crucial.”

Turnovers are another concern. “We had three turnovers. When you’re in a good tight game, if you lose the turnover battle three to zero, you’re probably not going to win the game,” Brohm admitted.

James Madison’s offense will test Louisville’s pace and communication. “They’ve got a really good quarterback who can run and throw with a good running back and some weapons on the outside,” Brohm said. “They’ll go to no huddle pace that will make you get ready to go fast and your communication has to be good.”

The head coach of Louisville welcomes the prime-time atmosphere. “I love playing night games,” he said. “This stadium has seen a lot of really good ones. We’ll need the fans to help us and be loud. That definitely makes an advantage for our team.”

Louisville and James Madison clash Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2, a chance for Brohm’s Cardinals to prove that focus and toughness can carry them past a dangerous opponent.
