One of this off-season's most contentious compensation picks has finally been put to rest.

Carlton has been awarded Pick 19, Band two, as compensation for losing Jack Silvagni as per Tom Morris of Nine.

Since Silvagni notified Carlton of his desire to be traded to St Kilda in early September, there has been continuous chatter regarding what compensation band a player of his age and contract would fall into.

The initial reported length and price tag of Silvagni’s contract, a five-year deal worth more than $4 million, would have usually amounted to Band One compensation.

But, Silvagni’s length of tenure at Carlton resultingly became a major factor in the compensation selection, with AFL’s Cal Twomey reporting that an end-of-first-round pick appeared to be more than likely for Silvagni.

Carlton has now landed on a Band two compensation, making him - as it stands - the first free agent, with his length of tenure to receive compensation any higher than a second-round pick.

Of course, this pick is expected to fall out of the first round with numerous compensation picks to come over the next week.

Still, such a return is a huge boost to Carlton's draft hand, especially after the club traded away their 2025 first-round pick in a pick swap with Hawthorn last season.

As it currently stands, Carlton now owns pick 19 to go along with 34, 44 and 62.

Their draft hand will continue to be strengthened with Tom De Koning's expected Band One compensation.
