CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee, Oct. 3 — David Gabriel-Georges ran for 280 yards and three touchdowns Friday night. And his Baylor [Chattanooga, TN] Red Raiders needed every bit of it to hold off the McCallie [Chattanooga, TN] Blue Tornado for a 38-35 win in a battle between Tennessee's top two high school football programs.
It marked the first time Baylor had won on McCallie's home field in nearly 30 years (1996), and it established the undefeated Red Raiders as the team to beat in The Volunteer State.
For McCallie, the loss came two weeks after the Blue Tornado recorded one of the biggest wins in school history on this same field. A 25-14 win over then SN No. 11 Mission Viejo of California lifted McCallie into the SN Composite Rankings, and the Blue Tornado entered this game still No. 45 in the country on that list. Their inability to beat their rivals will cost them, however, as the loss to Baylor is their second of the season counting an earlier 20-10 defeat at the hands of the Ensworth [Nashville, TN] Tigers.
Gabriel-Georges's big night was fueled by his ability to continue picking up yards after contact. He was almost impossible to tackle in the open field, and his touchdowns runs alone covered 51, 53, and 60 yards. His first two scores helped Baylor crawl out of a 14-0 hole early in the second quarter to pull even with the Blue Tornado, and by halftime the Red Raiders had their first lead of the game with a field goal on the final play of the first half.
Baylor then added to their lead early in the second half, taking a 24-14 third-quarter lead before McCallie added a touchdown to trim the deficit to 24-21 heading into the final stanza. The fourth quarter then turned into a wild affair with each team responding like prize fighters, scoring with punches that would have ended the fight on any other evening.
The lead changed hands four times alone in the fourth quarter, and McCallie's last big blow put the Blue Tornado back in front at 35-31 in a game that each team had led by double digits. But Red Raiders' quarterback Briggs Cherry's 16-yard strike to Kaiden Dewey with just over a minute to play proved to be the knockout punch that finally sent McCallie to the mat.
McCallie falls to 5-2 and likely out of the national rankings heading into a bye week. They'll be back in action at the Knoxville [TN] Catholic Fighting Irish on October 17.
Baylor, meanwhile, improves to 6-0 and will likely move up from their No. 35 position in the SN Composite Rankings heading into a bye week of their own. The Red Raiders will be back in action on October 17, hosting the Ambassador Christian School Lions of Huntersville, North Carolina.
