Streak Busters: Phoebus's 51-game win streak ends in bid to tie their own previous state record of 52 consecutive wins image

The Phoebus Phantoms saw their 51-game win streak end in a contest where they were attempting to tie their previous state record of 52 consecutive wins.

With roughly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least 15 teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs terminated.

The longest streak to end was the Phoebus [Hampton, VA] Phantoms' 51-game run that began on November 12, 2021. It ended in a 34-20 loss Saturday afternoon to the Warwick [Newport News, VA] Raiders.

Amazingly, the loss came in a game where Phoebus was trying to tie the Virginia state record of 52 consecutive wins – a record the Phantoms themselves set in 2011.

Phoebus's 51-game streak spanned four consecutive Virginia state championships

The Phoebus Phantoms' streak was the third-longest active streak in the nation headed into this weekend's action. It spanned two Virginia VHSL Class 4 state championships in 2023 and 2024 along with two Class 3 titles in 2021 and 2022.

The Phantoms had not lost since November 5, 2021, in a 42-0 thrashing at the hands of the Oscar Smith [Chesapeake, VA] Tigers. The streak started the very next week on November 12 in a 46-0 win over the Tabb [Yorktown, VA] Tigers. That 2021 season ended in a 22-14 win over the Liberty Christian [Lynchburg, VA] Bulldogs for the Class 3 state title.

They won every game in a rout the following season, registering seven shutouts along the way before blasting the Heritage [Lynchburg, VA] Pioneers, 48-7, for their second straight Class 3 title. But the wins kept coming even after a move to Class 4, and the 2023 season included a landmark 104-0 win over the Jamestown [Williamsburg, VA] Eagles en route to another state championship. This time, it came in a 21-14 decision over the Salem [VA] Spartans.

Last year, the Phantoms added yet another Class 4 trophy to their case, winning every game comfortably before capping another undefeated season with a 23-6 win over the Varina [Richmond, VA] Blue Devils.

Long streaks in South Carolina, Mississippi also come to an end

The Hammond [Columbia, SC] Skyhawks were the only other team with a win streak of more than 20 games to lose this weekend.

The Skyhawks headed into Friday night having won 28 straight games, a run that included two Class 4A state titles in South Carolina's independent SCISA ranks.

Meanwhile, down in Mississippi, two 18-game win streaks came to an end as the Tupelo [MS] Golden Wave and the Grenada [MS] Chargers each saw their long streaks terminated in Friday night action. Tupelo is the Mississippi MHSAA Class 7A defending state champion while Grenada is the reigning Class 6A title holder.
