The Chicago Bears could conceivably trade tight end Cole Kmet this year and one analyst believes the Washington Commanders could be a suitor if that happens.

Kmet's future in Chicago is currently on shaky ground after the team took Colston Loveland in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. If Kmet hits the trade block, there will be plenty of teams interested in his services.

One of those teams could be the Commanders, according to Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox.

He proposes the following trade:

  • Bears get: 2026 5th-round pick
  • Commanders get: TE Cole Kmet

"A lot will depend on whether Loveland keeps Kmet from having a significant role in Chicago — as Brock Bowers did to former second-round pick Michael Mayer in Las Vegas," he wrote of a possible Kmet trade. "The Bears, though, can expect a much stronger trade package than what the Raiders might expect for Mayer"

The Commanders could use an upgrade at tight end, with the team sporting an aging Zach Ertz as the starter. Granted, Ertz had more receiving yards than Kmet last season, but at the age of 34, he could hit the wall this season.

Kmet is eight years younger and has a history of solid production. The veteran tight end has three seasons of 500 yards or more, and two over 600 yards. He had his best season in 2023, when he posted a career-high 719 yards.

It's true Kmet had a down year in 2024, but that was hardly his fault, as the Bears' offense was a mess as a whole with rookie Caleb Williams and there were a lot of mouths to feed overall.

The biggest holdup in a Kmet trade could be the money.

Kmet still has two years left on his $50 million contract after 2025 and has cap hits of $11.6 million over the next two years, although there are easy outs in his deal in 2026 and 2027, so it's not that daunting.

If not for his contract, Kmet might be able to fetch more. A fifth-round pick sounds right and would be well worth the investment for a Commanders team with a young budding star quarterback in Jayden Daniels and legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.
