Following his ejection from the Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter addressed the incident.
Carter was caught spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott prior to the first offensive play of the game. An official saw Carter's inexcusable act and threw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in the ejection.
Carter thought Prescott was showing hostility by spitting at the Eagles' defensive huddle, but the Cowboys signal-caller said that was not his intent at all, former Cowboys head coach and NBC analyst Jason Garrett revealed after the game.
After the game, Carter took responsibility for what he did.
"It was a mistake that happened on my side and it just won't happen again," Carter said. "I feel bad for just my teammates and fans out there... But we'll get better. It won't happen again."
Carter was then asked about Prescott spitting first.
"I don't try to do nothing out of the ordinary," Carter replied. "You know, anything that I feel like I've done something bad, it's provoked."
Here's what Prescott said about the incident with Carter in the postgame presser:
“I don’t wish for anybody to get (thrown) out of the game. … I know how excited each and every one of us are to kick off the season in the season opener and a hell of a player like that doesn’t even get a chance on the first play. Unfortunate circumstance," Prescott said.
Prescott also said that he felt insulted that Carter thought he would spit on someone.
Luckily for Carter, the ejection didn't end up costing the Eagles on Thursday night, as the reigning Super Bowl champions were able to hold off the Cowboys and win, 24-20.
Now, we'll await word on a possible suspension for Carter.
History suggests he won't get suspended, but with the NFL putting an emphasis on better sportsmanship in 2025, it's possible the league makes an example out of him.
At the very least, Carter is going to face a hefty fine. If he does get suspended, Carter will miss the Week 2 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
