New York Mets fans were all asking the same question:

Why is Richard Lovelady in the game?

The Mets entered the night with a one-game lead in the NL Wild Card standings.

And they were relying on a guy they sent down earlier this year?

Yep, exactly.

Why is Richard Lovelady pitching for Mets?

The Mets had Lovelady pitching because they didn't have much choice.

Rookie starter Jonah Tong got shelled, giving up five quick runs to the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets needed somebody to eat some innings.

Lovelady was their choice.

Tong pitched into the third, but he didn't get an out as five runs came across.

Lovelady gave up a homer to Matt Shaw in the fourth, but that one run wasn't a big deal relative to the five that came before it.

The Mets don't have much wiggle room, but if Lovelady can save some of the bullpen, it'll be a good thing.
