One of the top priorities for the Boston Red Sox this offseason is to find more quality starting pitchers to help Garrett Crochet in the rotation. However, it seems like the Sox are going for only one type of pitcher.
According to Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, the Sox will only be targeting starters that “move the needle” at the front end of the rotation.
“What we need to do, and what we’ll do over the course of the offseason, is take a step back and really recognize what type of potential pitching additions or acquisitions really move the needle for us, because we do have a strong group of pitching depth,” Breslow said.
This means the Sox will truly be looking for a second ace. With pitching depth in Kutter Crawford, Kyle Harrison, Patrick Sandoval, and Payton Tolle. This means they’ll go for someone like the Minnesota Twins’ Joe Ryan, the San Diego Padres’ Dylan Cease, or Michael King.
Honestly, that would be the best for the Sox as well. They are the fourth-wealthiest team in the MLB, and they need to start showing it. If they can shell out for one or two top-quality front-end pitchers, they’d show the MLB and their fans they are seriously committed to this new era.
Hopefully, Breslow and the front office stick true to their word and will find their pitcher that moves the needle. And, they’ll go re-sign Alex Bregman and get another righty slugger while they’re at it.
