The Boston Red Sox knew there was a chance that Alex Bregman would opt out of his contract. And it’s happened.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the superstar third baseman has officially opted out, and will test free agency. Sox fans shouldn’t be too worried however, as Heyman did point out the Sox are still the most logical landing spot.

“Alex Bregman will be opting out of his current Red Sox deal, sources say, and off his fine first year in Boston, there could be an extra suitor or two, potentially including at least one surprise team (mentioned below) — although Boston still seems like a logical fit,” Heyman wrote.

Heyman continued, revealing all the other suitors the Sox will have to fight off to keep their leader.

“But the field should include more teams, making it an easy call to opt out of his deal, which calls for $80M over the next two years. The Tigers are the most obvious suitor with his old Astros manager A.J. Hinch. The Tigers offered $171.5M over six years last year, and he countered about $10M higher before taking Boston’s three-year deal. The Jays and Mariners, playing in the ALCS, are among other possible fits, but there could be some surprise teams,” Heyman concluded.

This season, Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462/.821 with 28 doubles, 18 home runs, and 62 RBI in 114 games played. He was also a great glove at third, much better than the previous third baseman, Rafael Devers.

The Sox have the advantage of being the incumbent team, and the fact Bregman loves Boston. Hopefully, they capitalize on that fact, and make sure no other suitor comes close to what they bring to the table.
