Texas Tech has begun 2025 on fire. The Red Raiders sit at 5–0 and are ranked No. 9 in the latest AP Poll—a position the program hasn't occupied since 2008, when they reached as high as No. 2.

In the span of five games, Texas Tech has looked every bit college football's most balanced team. They've dominated every opponent they've faced, accumulating victories by blowout margins and never having allowed an opponent to outscore them by more than 14 points. Altogether, in the first three quarters of all five games, the Red Raiders' defense has allowed only 21 points—a staggering total that accounts for the manner in which they've controlled play on both sides of the line.

Much of that success starts on the defensive side. Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez has been all over the field, leading a revamped unit that's playing with speed, physicality, and intent. That Red Raider defense that had been Texas Tech's Achilles' heel is now one of its greatest strengths. For the first time in years, opposing teams are having trouble finding gaps in Texas Tech's front seven.

Offensively, the Red Raiders have still managed to light it up, despite having to contend with quarterback injuries. Behren Morton has played crisp when healthy, and backup Will Hammond has slid right in to pick up the offense without losing a step. The two have come together with efficiency to give the Red Raiders stability and confidence even when bad things occur.

The blend of defensive depth and offensive strength has made Texas Tech's story one of the most intriguing in college football this season. McGuire's team plays with swagger, showing restraint and a faith that is reminiscent of the top programs in the country.

But still, the way forward won't be easy. The Red Raiders will be counting on Morton being healthy and performing consistently as they enter heavy conference play. But from what they've accomplished so far this season, Texas Tech could be more than a hot streak—they could be a real contender.

For the first time in more than a decade, there's excitement in Lubbock that does not feel fake. The Red Raiders are not only winning ball games, they’re dominating on both sides of the ball and creating real buzz.
