Texas Tech rallies past Houston set for first 5-0 start since 2013 image

For the first time since 2013, Texas Tech is off to a 5-0 start. The Red Raiders remained unbeaten with a road win over Houston on Saturday night, spoiling the Cougars’ home crowd at TDECU Stadium. An announced attendance of 42,806 packed the stands -- the third-largest crowd in TDECU Stadium history and the seventh sellout since the venue opened in 2014.

Texas Tech rallies past Houston to jump to a 5-0 start.

Texas Tech jumped out to an early lead behind three first-quarter field goals from Stone Harrington and Upton Bellenfant, then blew open the game as Behren Morton hit Cameron Dickey for a 69-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 15-3. The Red Raiders’ JKoby Williams added two rushing touchdowns—including a 5-yard score in the second quarter and a 1-yard plunge in the fourth—to keep Houston out of reach for the duration.

Houston's quarterback Conner Weigman threw for just 71 yards with an interception before departing the game in the second quarter with an apparent injury; he did not return to the game. Houston managed just one offensive highlight, a 64-yard touchdown strike from Zeon Chriss to Amare Thomas late in the second quarter, briefly cutting the deficit to 25-11. After that, Tech’s defense slammed the door, limiting the Cougars to 267 total yards and just one conversion on 12 third-down attempts.

The Cougars will face Oklahoma State next week, while Texas Tech will face Kansas. Texas Tech is in a favorable position to break into the Top 10 in tomorrow's AP Poll.
