There have been some notable names who have represented both Manchester clubs. None more controversial than Carlos Tevez, whose signing Manchester City milked with their "Welcome to Manchester" sign.

Dennis Law, Peter Schmeichel, and Owen Hargreaves are others who have also represented both the red and blue halves of Manchester.

Mark Hughes played for United and managed City. Now, a former City player has expressed his desire to manage United.

Dino Toppmoller signed for City in 2001 from Saarbrucken, but he did not make an appearance before returning to Germany with Bochum.

Toppmoller told BILD when asked about his managerial ambitions (translated from German), "I often played computer games as a child, always with one team: Manchester United. That would definitely be nice someday, because it’s an extraordinary club."

Toppmoller was a forward during his playing days. It did not work out for him at City, but he represented other notable German teams, including Eintracht Frankfurt and Augsburg.

It is Frankfurt that he now manages, and has been their boss since 2023. Toppmoller took them to the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season, where they lost to eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur

Before being Frankfurt's manager, Toppmoller was Julian Nagelsmann's assistant at Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

Due to Rubem Amorim continuing to struggle as United's leader, one day, Toppmoller could get his chance with the Red Devils.

However, due to Toppmoller not making a competitive appearance for City, he will not be the most controversial person to cross the Manchester divide.
