George Liddard became the youngest British and Commonwealth middleweight champion of all time with a sparkling 10th-round stoppage of Kieron Conway.
The 23-year-old moves to 13-0, with eight of those wins coming inside the scheduled distance. This dominant performance at York Hall stands as by far his most impressive.
Conway, who slips to 23-4-1, had been on a resurgent six-fight winning streak but fell behind on the cards early on before apparent injuries to his left hand and right shoulder put the writing on the wall.
Liddard scored a ninth-round knockdown as he followed up a one-two and Conway's corner threw in the towel with their man forlorn and defenceless.
Liddard swaggered through his ringwalk in confident style and started sharply, beating Conway to the punch and putting together crisp combinations. Those carried particular venom when they ended on the right hook.
The challenger's fizzing jab made Conway reluctant to throw his own with much conviction. A right uppercut to Liddard's chin punctuated the champion's early struggles but he was already marked up around the right eye in round two.
Conway found a nice double left hook in the fourth, then a one-two upstairs as he enjoyed his best session of the contest. Still, he was being largely outworked and biting on feints as Liddard got off the second phase of his attacks smartly.
In the sixth, they exchanged thrillingly as Liddard increasingly looked to target the body. Into the second half of the fight, the main question was whether the younger man would be able to maintain his punishing work rate against a fighter attuned to the championship distance.
The pace slowed in round eight, which allowed Conway to grind forward effectively. The quality work – most notably from the right hook once again – came from Liddard, but Conway might have won the round on volume. A further complication then revealed itself as the champion told his corner he had a damaged left and was struggling to make a fist.
Sensing his opponent's discomfort, Liddard pounced in the ninth, battering Conway into the ropes, where his knees buckled and a knockdown was called. Conway chopped back bravely with a right hook under the follow-up assault.
His corner asked to see more of that shot in an attempt to rally their man, but thankfully, they were not brave on his behalf. When Conway sagged under Liddard's final attack, they called in the first stoppage loss of his career.
The towel comes in and it's OVER‼️
