In the last couple of years, a rivalry has developed between these two and it is an intriguing encounter that could be defining for both sides for the rest of the campaign in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have struggled for goals since the departure of Alexander Isak over the summer but performances haven't been poor, with three goalless draws on the road, with the latest being against AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last weekend.

Arsenal have already fallen five points behind defending champions Liverpool at the top-of-the-table as a result of dropping points in big games. The Gunners could only salvage a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium last week.

The Sporting News brings you a complete betting preview as the Magpies try to topple the Gunners once again at St James’ Park this weekend.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal: Who will win?

Newcastle will seek to keep things tight and play on the counter-attack here and they are facing an Arsenal side that have struggled for goals in big games, with Mikel Arteta often opting to be overly cautious. With that in mind, a low-scoring clash seems likely on Tyneside.

  • It has been a tricky start for Newcastle thus far with just one win, but they remain in contention for a top four finish according to the bookmakers.
  • Their start to the season has seen their odds drift once again, with Arsenal still viewed as the likeliest challengers to win the league title.
  • Newcastle hammered Bradford City 4-1 in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal lineups

Here's how we think the teams will lineup this weekend. Eddie Howe has been cautious with Nick Woltemade's involvement but he should start this one.

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has to decide whether he is willing to risk a little or go with the same fairly blunt midfield three of Mikel Merino, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal team news

  • Eddie Howe has made a few changes between tactical setups this season but Newcastle are expected to return to a simple 4-3-3 shape, building around Nick Woltemade up-front.
  • Jacob Murphy has passed a late fitness test ahead of the clash but Sweden international winger Anthony Elanga will fancy his chances of keeping his place instead.
  • Arsenal head to St James’ Park with a fresh injury concern as it has been confirmed that in-form winger Noni Madueke will be sidelined for the next couple of months due to a knee issue.
  • Bukayo Saka has worked his way back to fitness and started against Port Vale in midweek after coming off the bench against Man City last week, whilst Eberechi Eze is also expected to start.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal Betting Tips

  • Arsenal or Draw & UNDER 2.5 Total Goals: 2.12 with Parimatch

Arsenal look well set for another serious crack at the title, with 10 points already banked from their first five outings. On paper, they seem the likelier side to take all three points here, especially with Newcastle still trying to recalibrate in attack following Alexander Isak's controversial switch to Liverpool.

That said, the smarter play might be on under 2.5 goals, with both defences looking rock-solid so far. A narrow 1-0 to Arsenal wouldn't be a shock, given their resilience in clawing back a draw against City last time out and the fact they've only drawn a blank once in their last 17 domestic fixtures (that 1-0 defeat at Anfield). Still, don't rule out Newcastle digging in and eking out a 0-0 stalemate on home turf.
