The Indian cricket team could be heading toward another leadership transition - this time in the 50-over format. With a packed schedule across formats and senior players nearing the final stages of their international careers, the selectors and team management are evaluating long-term captaincy options.

Stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have announced their retirement from T20I and Test formats and their days in ODI cricket are also numbered.

While both seniors would love to represent India one last time in a World Cup in 2027, reports have emerged that the team management is already looking beyond the legends and could opt to go ahead with new generation players at the flagship competition.

Amid speculation over Virat and Rohit's long-term future in international cricket, the BCCI are also exploring options of selecting the right person to take the captaincy from Sharma's hands in the 50-over format.

Shubman Gill only contender to replace Rohit Sharma as India's next ODI captain

While Shreyas Iyer's name has been floated on several occassions as India's next ODI captain, Revsportz reports that Shubman Gill is the only contender to lead in One-Day Internationals.

Gill has already taken charge of the Test team and delivered a memorable series in England as the Indians managed to hold the hosts to a 2-2 draw.

The Gujarat Titans captain has also returned to the T20I team ahead of the Asia Cup and has been named as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy. The vice-captaincy in T20s was a clear indication from the board that they see Gill taking the captaincy from SKY in the long run.

Thus, it naturally makes sense that Gill will take over in the ODI format as well, as India would like to go back to their one captaincy policy across all formats.
