Why Commanders' RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. is inactive again despite high praise from Dan Quinn image

When the Washington Commanders traded away Brian Robinson Jr., the door appeared open for Chris Rodriguez Jr.

Head coach Dan Quinn even suggested as such. He said in August that Rodriguez "would be one at the front taking his place" when referring to Robinson's role as the Commanders' short-yardage RB.

But for the second consecutive week to start the season, Rodriguez is inactive.

It's a bummer for a player who appeared to have broken out this summer.

Why is Chris Rodriguez Jr. inactive?

The Washington Commanders have Chris Rodriguez Jr. inactive for Thursday Night Football in favor of three other running backs.

Austin Ekeler's status near the top of the depth chart was never in question, even when Robinson was around.

Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt was the shining star of the preseason, and he rewarded the faith in Week 1 with 10 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown.

And the Commanders have thus far opted to use Jeremy McNichols as their RB3 on the first two game days. McNichols had four carries in the opener and also gave Washington seven snaps on special teams.

Washington evidently decided that with even Deebo Samuel to carry the football, Rodriguez hasn't been needed on the active roster.

The Commanders mixed up the back half of their RB depth chart a decent amount last season, so there'll be a chance down the road for Rodriguez to play.

It just won't be in Weeks 1 or 2.
