Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield gets 'amicable' contract update on eve of 2025 NFL season image

Baker Mayfield has revitalized his NFL career in Tampa Bay.

The former Cleveland Browns' No. 1 overall pick took a bit of a winding journey for a minute or two, but with the Buccaneers, he's the star quarterback that he was always meant to be.

That also means a payday could be in his future.

Mayfield is entering the second season of a three-year, $100 million pact with the Bucs.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, an extension could be on the horizon.

"Baker Mayfield and the Bucs can be expected to readdress his contract in the offseason — barring a surprise return to the table before that, anyway," Howe wrote on Friday, Aug. 29. "The Bucs got tremendous value out of the first season of his three-year, $100 million contract, so Mayfield is in line for a raise with another strong season. It’s reasonable to feel confident in an amicable resolution once they reach that point, as general manager Jason Licht leads one of the handful of most respected front offices in the NFL. He wants Mayfield around for the long term, and Mayfield feels the same way."

Mayfield is coming off a career year in which he threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns.

He has thrown 69 total touchdowns across his two seasons with the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay is hoping there's more where that came from. They beefed up the WR room this offseason by drafting Ohio State star Emeka Egbuka in the first round. That'll be key early in the season with Chris Godwin dinged up, too.

Mayfield, 30, has confidence out there no matter who he's throwing to. It's one of the traits that has allowed him to push through the struggles.

He's already earned plenty of money in the NFL, and if he keeps playing like he has in Tampa Bay, there'll be more where that came from.
