Protect the franchise.

That's the rule, above all else, on an NFL field.

The franchise, in almost all cases, is the quarterback.

For the New York Giants, it's rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.

And on a scramble during Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, Dart got hung out to dry a little bit.

Dart took off up the middle to try and run for a first down. He took a shot at the end of the play. And it became clear that wide receiver Jalin Hyatt hadn't exactly gotten in the way to throw a block at the guy closing in on Dart.

When he got up, just for a second, Dart appeared to express some annoyance to Hyatt.

Dart is a talented rusher, and his wide receivers will have to recognize when he begins to take off. The timing on it all can be tough, and maybe Hyatt didn't realize until it was too late.

That still doesn't make it an ideal look, and the Giants can't love having Dart take a hit like that.

It's something that'll just have to get worked out as the Giants go forward.
