The San Francisco 49ers made their investment in Brock Purdy.

In fact, it was a five-year, $265 million contract investment with $181 million guaranteed.

To think that this quarterback future is going to point anywhere other than Purdy just doesn't quite add up.

That hasn't stopped the speculation in the last 16 hours or so. Mac Jones played really well and gritted out a Thursday Night Football win. He's been solid standing in for Purdy, who has now missed three games with a toe injury.

The Amazon Prime broadcast play-by-play man, Al Michaels, wondered aloud multiple times whether Jones could steal Purdy's job.

Pro Football Talk's founder, Mike Florio, wrote Friday morning with the headline, "Do the 49ers have a quarterback controversy?"

The reality? There's no way for there to be a controversy here.

For one, Purdy is still the superior quarterback.

"Purdy is an elite deep ball thrower and will be at his most effective when not bothered by the toe anymore and when he has at least George Kittle back to help him stretch the field," writes The Sporting News senior NFL writer, Vinnie Iyer.

And that contract talks. It just does.

The 49ers seemed to waver back and forth a little this offseason before giving Purdy a gigantic payday. Like it or not, a team isn't benching a guy they just gave that much money.

Jones, for better or worse, is on his third team for a reason. In Kyle Shanahan's system, he can win football games.

But the 49ers decided Purdy is their franchise quarterback. The dollar signs next to his name prove that. And that won't change after just a few games missed due to injury.
