Why Vikings are using Jordan Mason, Zavier Scott in different ways while awaiting Aaron Jones' injury return image

The Minnesota Vikings have ben pleasantly surprised to discover they have running back depth even without Aaron Jones.

Jordan Mason has been great in his first season with the Vikings after being traded from the San Francisco 49ers.

And Zavier Scott has followed a winding path to being a solid third-down back and receiving RB for the Vikings.

That is set to continue in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mason is made to be a workhorse, and he's been exactly that with Jones out.

Scott came out of nowhere but has been a high-quality change of pace. He's the kind of back that the Vikings will send on a wheel route to take advantage of a linebacker in man coverage.

And for now, the Vikings continue to rely on this two-man approach.

When is Aaron Jones coming back?

There has been some speculation that Jones will return on Thursday Night Football in Week 8.

But there's no real concrete reporting on that.

Jones is eligible to come off Injured Reserve, and one aspect to that would make sense: The Vikings would probably not have wanted him to play two games in five days immediately coming back from injury. If he returns Thursday, he'll then get the mini-bye before the following week's action.

When Jones comes back, he'll likely split time with Mason and bump Scott to very minimal work.
