The status of Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon has been up in the air since the offseason as the veteran has been dealing with a foot injury.
Mixon's exact injury remains unknown, but it has been serious enough for him to miss the entire offseason and the first five games of the 2025 season. Mixon has been on the non-football injury list since July.
While there has been plenty of doubt about Mixon's ability to play at all this season, Texans general manager Nick Caserio has finally offered some semblance of hope that he will be able to play at some point in 2025.
Here's the latest update from Caserio.
Joe Mixon injury update
When speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Caserio remained non-committal on Mixon playing this season, but he also revealed that Mixon is "making progress" and isn't ruling out the 29-year-old from making his return to the field.
"He's making progress, so we won't put a particular timetable on it, so I think over the next few three or four weeks, we'll probably get a little more information here, kind of see how he's progressing," Caserio said.
"Once we kind of get to that period, probably have a better sense of which way it's going to go for the duration of the year."
Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com added that, according to sources, Mixon's injury is a "tough, complicated situation" and there remains doubt the veteran running back will be able to suit up this season, so there's that, also.
Caserio's timeline tracks with a recent report from The Athletic's Dianna Russini, who noted the Texans could get more clarity on Mixon's status in October.
Nevertheless, this is the first shred of good news we've gotten on Mixon. It doesn't guarantee he's going to be back, but it does offer some hope for him.
