The Dallas Cowboys lost one of their rookies to the Houston Texans on Wednesday.

The Texans found a defensive back replacement off the Cowboys' practice squad after releasing C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

It's undrafted rookie Zion Childress going from Dallas to Houston. Because the Texans gave him an active roster spot, he can leave the Cowboys' practice squad to join the Texans.

Childress had been elevated from the practice squad for two of the Cowboys' first three games. He had one tackle, which came on special teams.

It's not a great time for Dallas to lose cornerback depth as they deal with some injuries.

It's a solid pickup for the Texans, though.

Childress is originally from New Caney, Texas, and he began his college career at Texas State.

He then transferred to Kentucky, where he was a captain and a playmaker (although he didn't actually record an interception in three seasons with the Wildcats).

Childress measures at 5-foot-11 and 199 pounds. He didn't run a 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, but his 20-yard shuttle time was 4.35 seconds.

The Texans may just need the added depth, but Childress' spot on the active roster means he could see the field sooner rather than later.

The Cowboys will now have an open practice squad spot to fill. Given the defensive back bumps and bruises in Dallas, it wouldn't be surprising to see them seek an available CB or safety from free agency.
