The top-ranked Texas Longhorns went into Columbus to face the third-ranked Ohio State University Buckeyes with a lot of hype surrounding Arch Manning. However, his day didn’t go as planned.
Manning, who many consider to be a strong candidate to possibly win this year's Heisman Trophy, took a major blow and will need luck on his side. Trust me when I say, this No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup will be used as the opening argument as to why he shouldn’t win the award.
Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia brought an NFL approach and didn’t let up. He made sure his defense casted as much doubt as they could by preventing Manning from seeing his receivers open.
The Buckeyes also kept him from getting into a rhythm until late in the fourth quarter, when he caught fire by throwing a touchdown pass to Parker Livingston, which was their own points of the game. Manning went 17-of-30 for 170 yards with a touchdown and interception.
The Longhorns had multiple opportunities to score points in the game. Unfortunately, they were met by a Buckeyes defense that prevented them in the red zone. This doesn’t bode well for Manning, who looked jittery under center. The Buckeyes' defense won all four battles on fourth down. But it’s not all on Manning either. The Longhorns’ rushing attack averaged over four yards per carry. When those tough yards needed to be gained, they shrunk in the moment.
Patricia will have Heisman voters looking back at the body of work Manning had against their third-ranked team and wondering if he’s legit or not.
