Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables gave a positive update on wide receiver Keontez Lewis following his frightening injury during the Sooners’ 44-0 win over Kent State on Saturday.
The incident occurred early in the first quarter when Lewis ran into a brick wall while attempting to catch a touchdown pass from Michael Hawkins Jr. The impact left him motionless for several moments before medical staff carted him off the field on a stretcher and later transported him to a local hospital.

Venables said after the game that Lewis was “alert” and “coherent,” adding that he was experiencing back pain but had full movement and awareness. “It was scary,” Venables admitted in his postgame press conference. “Once I got over there and realized he was answering questions clearly, I was very thankful. It was like being in a car wreck at full speed.”
According to the Sooner Sports Network broadcast, Lewis was sent off site for precautionary testing. “The latest scans were good as well,” Venables added. “Hopefully he’ll be OK long term.”
Lewis has recorded 17 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns this season. The senior from East St. Louis is on pace for a career year in Norman. No word yet if he'll be available as Oklahoma faces Texas.
The Red River Shootout in Dallas is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
