The Boston Celtics are still trying to add talent for next season. Despite likely not competing for an NBA championship with Jayson Tatum’s injury, they are still looking to add to their roster for next year and beyond. A recent Celtics free agency rumor has the team linked to a controversial free agency candidate.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line recently reported that the Celtics are one of the few teams in on pursuing Ben Simmons in free agency.

“League sources say that the Suns have also had some recent dialogue with former All-Star Ben Simmons, who I'm told has drawn interest since free agency began from Boston, New York and Sacramento.”

The Ben Simmons-Celtics fit could be great. They are a team that has prided itself on dominating on the defensive end. Simmons' strength and length could easily help the Celtics keep their defensive identity. Especially after losing Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis this offseason.

The Celtics also have a unique roster composition to help support Simmons’ downfall. Simmons' injury history and lack of shooting ability have made him a controversial figure in many NBA circles. The Celtics could provide him the perfect environment to stay healthy and thrive on offense.

The Celtics have tons of depth and shooters. The depth can help Simmons ease into a bench role, ideally limiting his possibility for injury. They also can surround him with four other guys who can make a three, giving him ample spacing for playmaking.

If this Ben Simmons-Celtics rumor is true, the Celtics could be getting an imperfect asset and making the most of him.
