Blue Jays could target $56 million former Cy Young in deadline blockbuster image

The Toronto Blue Jays overcame a rocky start to the 2025 season, getting hot at the end of May and surging to the top of the American League East. They now lead the New York Yankees by four games.

Their surge has also allowed them to pull into a tie for the best record in the Junior Circuit. Now, the trade deadline looms, and they'll be adding this year rather than subtracting.

One area of need is their starting rotation. They have solid starters in place, but one more certainly wouldn't hurt.

Patrick Mooney and Will Sammon recently discussed Sandy Alcantara in The Athletic. They listed the Blue Jays as a possible trade fit.

"With both [Zac] Gallen and Alcantara, it will be a question of whether their respective teams would trade them for what they are now, or what they once were at their peaks. The Padres, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays are among the clubs that could play in this part of the pitching market."

Alcantara certainly has had a rough season since returning from Tommy John surgery. He is 5-9 with a 6.66 ERA in 20 starts this year.

The former Cy Young has also recorded 77 strikeouts in 104 innings pitched. His value has certainly taken a hit due to his struggles.

Miami will likely set a high asking price for him, even in the midst of a difficult season. Toronto doesn't have a ton of top prospects to spare.

Still, a change of scenery could help Alcantara. The Marlins are out of contention, while the Blue Jays are firmly in the race.

Having him in their postseason rotation could give them a big boost. We'll see if Toronto makes an offer.
