The Gators chomped the Tigers and made history in the process.

Florida had to win Game 2 of the 2023 College World Series finals Sunday to keep their season alive, and they did just that, in a big way, downing LSU 24-4. If that seems like a big number, that's because it is.

The 24 runs scored by the Gators set a record for runs by one team in a Men's College World Series game, and their offensive attack was relentless, with runs in seven of the nine innings. Florida also tied a CWS record with 23 hits and set a finals record with six home runs.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Florida offense without slugger Jac Caglianone. The Gators first baseman-pitcher went 3 for 6 with two home runs and made some history of his own. Caglianone now has the single-season home run record in the BBCOR bat era of college baseball (since 2011).

While the runs were nice — and the history was better — the Gators should hope that they have enough juice left in their bats for the final game of the 2023 NCAA season on Monday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Most runs by a team in a College World Series game

Florida set the record for most runs in a College World Series game with its 24 against LSU in Game 2 of the 2023 finals. The record was previously held by Notre Dame (in 1957) and Arizona State (in 1984).

NCAA single-season home run record

The NCAA single-season home run king is now Florida's Jac Caglianone — with a catch. Caglianone holds the record for the most home runs in the so-called BBCOR era (since 2011), which is marked by fewer home runs after the specifications for bats used in college baseball were changed.

Caglianone broke the BBCOR-era record just a year after Texas Ivan Melendez set it when he hit 32 for Texas.

The overall single-season home run king is Pete Incaviglia, who mashed 48 long balls in 75 games for Oklahoma State in 1985.
