Now that the New York Yankees have been eliminated from the MLB playoffs, it's time for the team's front office to start thinking about the offseason and key decisions that need to be made.
New York's team from the Bronx is always under a large magnifying glass, and as one of MLB's top spenders, they are expected to make changes like they do every offseason.
So, what are some of the big questions the Yankees face this offseason?
What will New York do with key free agents, aging players, and trade market speculation?
First off, New York has several players whose contracts have expired. Those players include Luke Weaver, Trent Grisham, Devin Williams, and Paul Goldschmidt. There's no way they will be able to retain them all.
The best guess is that they hold onto Luke Weaver and move on from the rest. Grisham just hit 34 home runs this season and will likely demand a value higher than the Yankees believe he is worth. Goldschmidt is aging and had a major dip in production down the stretch.
New York can opt to replace Goldschmidt with either Ben Rice, or they can look to the trade market to find another first base replacement. There is some speculation that Rays' first baseman, Yandy Diaz, may be available for trade. Devin Williams is essentially good as gone, as things just didn't quite work out for him in pinstripes.
However, the biggest question the Yankees face is what will happen with Cody Bellinger? He has a player option that he expected to exercise, but will the Yankees re-sign him? Bellinger had another above-average offensive season, and plays great defense at all three outfield spots, and can also play first.
This will be up to the Yankees, because it would make sense for Bellinger to want to return to Yankee Stadium, where it is easier to SLUG for left-handed hitters.
As always, New York will be primarily featured in many hot stove discussions and may also be rumored to sign some of the biggest free agents in the 2026 class.
