Yankees trade idea lands all-star first baseman to fill team's potential void image

The New York Yankees' season is officially over after being eliminated from the MLB playoffs by the Toronto Blue Jays.  That means the Yankees are in the offseason, and there is a lot to digest for the team's front office and what decisions they will make.

For one, New York has several players that are set to hit the open market, and if players like Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger opt to leave via free agency, that is a large amount of production to fill. Trent Grisham is also set to test free agency. Grisham and Bellinger combined for 60+ home runs in the regular season.

So, what can New York do in the trade market to address their current roster?

Should the Yankees trade for Rays' Yandy Diaz?

This type of trade proposal hinges on what New York does with Paul Goldschmidt, but the expectation is that the Yankees won't re-sign the aging first baseman due to poor performance down the stretch.

In a recent Bleacher Report article outlining what the Yankees may do this offseason, Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz is named as an ideal trade target:

"Díaz won the AL batting title in 2023 and has a .379 on-base percentage since the beginning of 2022. He is owed $12 million in 2026 and either $10M or $13M in 2027, pending how many plate appearances he makes next season. Either way, it's pittance to the Yankees, but the type of salary Tampa Bay often tries to turn into prospects."

The only drawback to trading for Diaz is that his time as a true first baseman is coming to an end. He was mainly a DH for the Rays this season, and New York already has options at DH for the 2026 season.
