Diamondbacks set 15-player MLB save record that’s hard to fathom image

The Arizona Diamondbacks have shared the wealth this season.

Specifically, they've let anyone and everyone record a save.

Seriously.

The Diamondbacks have set a new MLB record for players to record a save in one season. They've now had a ridiculous 15 guys close out a game under save criteria.

Jake Woodford was the latest, getting the job done Saturday night for his first save of the season.

The full list of 15 saviors:

  • Shelby Miller - 10
  • Justin Martinez - 5
  • A.J. Puk - 4
  • Kevin Ginkel - 3
  • Anthony DeSclafani - 2
  • Andrew Saalfrank - 2
  • Kyle Backhus - 1
  • Jalen Beeks - 1
  • Drey Jameson - 1
  • Bryce Jarvis - 1
  • Juan Morillo - 1
  • Kyle Nelson - 1
  • Ryne Nelson - 1
  • Ryan Thompson - 1
  • Jake Woodford - 1

Things got thrown off pretty early in the season for the Diamondbacks when Miller, Martinez and Puk all dealt with substantial injuries. That made it pretty much open season down in the Diamondbacks' bullpen.

The Diamondbacks are also below .500 on the season, at 64-66 entering Sunday. So to have 35 total saves, and spread between 15 different players, is that much more remarkable.

This isn't a record that will salvage a season that didn't go quite as well as anyone in Arizona would've liked.

But it's a quirky mark that shows that the Diamondbacks have figured out how to finish games off no matter who's on the mound. And that has to count for at least a little something, right?
