At the University of Connecticut, Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd dominated on the court while developing a close relationship off it.

Everyone now knows that Fudd and Bueckers, national championship-winning teammates at UConn, are a couple. But the pair recounted their first meeting -- and when they knew they would become best friends -- on the latest episode of Instagram's "Close Friends Only" podcast.

Fudd revealed her feeling that she "clicked" with Bueckers quickly upon meeting her as a high-schooler. Their friendship was borne through competition; Bueckers and Fudd competed to be the starting point guard for the U16 USA Basketball national team at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Women's Americas Championship in Argentina.

"I feel like we clicked immediately at USA Basketball," Fudd revealed. "On the court, we clicked."

In the final of that tournament, Fudd led the United States with 18 points as the US team defeated Canada, 91-46, to win the gold medal. And it was on the plane ride back to the States when the two truly started to connect.

"I don't remember talking to you at all off the court, but I remember the plane ride home to Minnesota talking to you and really liking you," Fudd said. "That's when I thought our personalities off the court clicked."

Bueckers agreed -- though she indicated that she had more off-court memories of Fudd than Fudd had of Bueckers.

"We had this on-court chemistry, and you don't remember me off the court, which is like..." Bueckers said, gesturing in mock disbelief.

Three years later, Fudd committed to UConn -- where Bueckers was already excelling as a freshman. And this past April, Fudd scored 24 points in an 82-59 win over South Carolina, delivering the Huskies' 12th title -- sending Bueckers to the WNBA as a national champion.
