The Connecticut Sun's potential relocation to Houston seems to be getting closer.

According to Alexa Philippou and Ramona Shelbourne at ESPN, "substantive talks" are underway between the Mohegan tribe and Rockets ownership over the Sun's sale, which would see the team relocate to Texas.

Talks have been described as "positive," and an improved offer from Tilman Fertitta and Rockets ownership could be accepted. That would end the Sun's 22-year stay in Uncasville, which followed four seasons as the Orlando Miracle between 1999 and 2002.

The Sun's future in Connecticut has long been under scrutiny. After a period of sustained championship contention when DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas played for the franchise, the Sun entered a rebuild in 2025 and finished with an 11-33 record.

The Sun play at Mohegan Sun Arena, which is located inside the Mohegan Sun casino and resort. The team's facilities are widely regarded as among the WNBA's worst, and the Mohegan tribe in July reached a deal to sell the team to former Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca -- who would have moved the team to Boston.

The WNBA has not had a presence in Houston since the Comets folded in 2008. The Comets won the league's first four championships, and WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has indicated that the league has strong interest in returning to Houston.

Some around the league suspect that this interest in working with Fertitta was a motivating factor in blocking the Sun's sale to Pagliuca.
