The 2025 WNBA season has been filled with a lot of unexpected disruptions across the board — teams have seen players unexpectedly depart, arrive, and go down with season-ending injuries at a rate that feels nearly impossible.
This season has also differed from the 2024 season in a major – and positive – way: last year's Angel Reese vs. Caitlin Clark discourse, which dominated nearly every part of the season in some way, has been largely absent.
It's been a welcome shift that has allowed more focus on what's actually happening on the court. And while Clark's ongoing injury battle may have something to do with the reason the conversation hasn't dominated the 2025 season, that doesn't mean it needed to be revived.
Unfortunately, Clark's teammate Sophie Cunningham took it upon herself to insert a little jab at Reese for seemingly no reason at all. During the September 3 episode of her "Show Me Something podcast", Cunningham had high praise for her teammate.

"I'm just being real and truthful that (Clark) has brought millions, millions," she said. "I wouldn't be surprised if it's billions of eyes onto the W and onto women's sports. She is a Kobe Bryant, and that's how Diana (Taurasi) was. That's how Sue (Bird) was. We've had these types of people, but this is just bigger because the media platform is bigger than it ever has been."
"I don't have an ego, so I'm able to just tell the truth. If it was someone else, I'd be like, yeah, Angel Reese, she's also brought millions of fans, you know what I mean. I think Caitlin has brought way more, but I also think she has too. I'm just not naive, and I might be blonde, but I'm not (expletive ) dumb," Cunningham added.
The comment isn't the worst thing she could have said, but at this point in the season, it doesn't feel especially relevant – and probably should have gone unsaid entirely.
