Call her Point Sophie.

Sophie Cunningham ran the point guard spot for long stretches of the Indiana Fever's game Saturday night against the Chicago Sky. It worked, as the Fever won comfortably.

Cunningham, normally a wing, was pressed into ball-handling duties in Caitlin Clark's continued injury absence.

The Fever just lost Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald to season-ending injuries, leaving essentially no point guards on the roster.

Indiana let Kelsey Mitchell (26 points) stay mostly off the ball to run her normal 2-guard stuff, and Cunningham brought the ball up the floor most of the game.

Cunningham seemed plenty comfortable.

Her final stats:

  • 16 points
  • 3 rebounds
  • 2 assists
  • 1 steal
  • 5-10 FG
  • 3-6 3FG
  • 3-3 FT

Most importantly, she was steady and in control.

Cunningham's leadership allowed Lexie Hull to have a bounceback game with 17 points of her own.

The Fever were only up four late in the first half, but they went on to win, 92-70.

The Sky, without Angel Reese, are scuffling. This is a game the Fever should never lose even when more shorthanded than they'd like.

And on a night Indiana needed it, Cunningham slid into a different role and delivered. Her first year with the Fever continues to be a great success.
